The Silent Pilgrims

A series of photography portrait Images of Deaf Pilgrims reciting the Hail Mary prayer in Medjugorje in Bosnia.

Portraits taken in March  2014 on my travels to Bosnia and Croatia after sharing a coach with this group by accident.

How much does a deaf person miss out due to loss of hearing?

Does having a sign language compensate sufficiently?

How much of our personal identity is constructed using words and language?

How much of our communication is based on sound & words?

How much of our cultural and group identity comes from language, dialect and speech?

Is silence really golden and if so are the rest of us missing out?
